Introduction

What Is The Full-Mouth Reconstruction?

Perfect White SmileSmile Makeover

Full-mouth reconstruction, also referred to as full-mouth restoration and Smile 360, involves a comprehensive approach. It is designed to replace missing teeth, repair damaged teeth, correct improperly aligned jaw joints and bites, reverse gum disease, rebuild lost jawbone mass, replace worn out dental appliances with dental implants, and most importantly, create the most gorgeous smiles that look relaxed and proportional to your face.

Smile 360 with Dr. Frey involves looking at the entire mouth, not just the visible teeth. It will do so much more than just make a beautiful smile, as we re-build the bite by placement of implants to repositioning the bite due to TMJ stresses, from using orthodontics to move the teeth to using bone grafts to rebuild the jawbone, full-mouth reconstruction, Smile 360 is an involved process. Dr. Frey can handle most of what is needed, depending on your unique situation, of course, but he may also enlist the work of esteemed endodontists, oral surgeons, and periodontists at his office since we are a  multi-speciality practice!

If any of these pieces of the dental pie stop working well, your oral health can become compromised. It may be a case of missing or severely decayed teeth. It could be gum disease. It could be bite problems caused by temporomandibular joint disorder. It could be a crooked smile.
At this point, all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaw may need attention. This is called full-mouth reconstruction— or Smile 360— and Dr. Frey has written a book with that exact title!  Almost three decades of experience in its various facets. His combination of neuromuscular and cosmetic dentistry expertise can give you back the healthy, enduring, natural smile you once had.

What Procedures May Be Involved With Full-Mouth Restoration?

Full-mouth reconstruction better known as Smile 360 with Dr. Frey isn’t a one-appointment situation. You have to make sure all aspects of the dental pie have been addressed before you can begin. Are your gums healthy? Is your bite good? Multiple phases and office visits may be necessary in advance to embarking on the Smile 360 procedure. The entire process may take different amounts of time to complete, depending on your situation.  Once you are ready and all aspects of your dental pie have been addressed, we like to perform the Smile 360 procedure in two major visits that are spaced two weeks apart.  Full-mouth reconstruction or the Smile 360 procedure can include any combination of the following procedures before we start:

●  Restorative dental treatments — Dental crowns, bridges, fillings, inlays and onlays

●  Implant dentistryImplants to replace missing teeth, and to provide anchor points for appliances such as bridges

●  Cosmetic dentistryPorcelain veneers, bonding, teeth whitening, gum re-contouring

Endodontic treatmentRoot canals Periodontal treatments — Gum scaling, root planting, and periodontal surgery to address gum disease, soft and hard tissue bone grafting

Who Is A Candidate For Full-Mouth Reconstruction?

There isn’t a single threshold denoting a full-mouth reconstruction. The term is mainly used to describe a situation that has progressed past just a tooth or two needing attention, or when the gums have passed gingivitis into full-on gum disease.  We call this a “Re-Organized Approach” which is the formula for long lasting teeth and a beautiful smile!

These are some possible issues that lead to full-mouth restoration:

● Multiple teeth that have been lost due to extensive decay or trauma
Generalized gum problems
A mouth full of old and different crowns and fillings from many generations
● Multiple teeth that have been injured or fractured
● Teeth that have been worn down from long-term grinding or acid reflux
● Ongoing issues with jaw, muscle, and headache pain due to improper jaw alignment–TMJ

The Smile 360 Procedure

The treatment techniques and length will vary between patients, but the first step is always a comprehensive dental exam. Before we can plan restorative dentistry, it’s important to assess your dental health.

In some instances, patients require neuromuscular dentistry to address pain and worn teeth from grinding. It is one of many pieces of the dental pie that needs to be addressed.  It’s important to address all aspects of the dental pie before cosmetic dentistry can begin so that your new smile is comfortable and everlasting. YES!

What Happens During Full Mouth Reconstruction?

We like to perform the Smile 360 procedure in two major visits spaced out in between one – two weeks. The first major visit is to prepare the teeth so that the dental lab can make the perfect smile and bite. It usually involves removing old crowns and fillings and making sure no decay exists in any teeth. You leave with a beautiful temporary restoration that resembles the final look. We call this the “trial smile”. We have you return for a minor visit so that we can perfect the “trial smile” that you are wearing temporarily. The second major visit is usually two visits combined in one.  We like to try-on the new porcelain teeth first and review them in front of a mirror. If they are not better or just as nice as the “trial smile” we do not put them in.  If you love them, we permanently bond in your new gorgeous smile!

What Is The Difference Between Full-Mouth Reconstruction And The Smile Makeover Procedure?

In order to be true “artists of the smile,” we look at the entire mouth and not just the visible teeth. This is what we call a re-organized approach. This treatment may require neuromuscular therapy, or bite correction, to correct the core of the problem that caused the cracked, broken, missing, or crooked teeth you may have.

Full-mouth reconstruction combines our expertise in both neuromuscular and cosmetic dentistry for a healthy and natural smile that will last.

Smile makeovers are generally elective procedures, utilizing dental procedures such as the placement of porcelain veneers or dental implants to improve the overall smile. Smile makeovers are cosmetic, meant to give the patient a beautiful smile. They only involve the teeth that show in the smile and do not take other issues into account.

Full-mouth reconstruction, on the other hand, is necessary if the patient wants to keep his or her teeth and not lose significant amounts of the jawbone to erosion. Full-mouth reconstruction can reverse a patient’s declining oral health.

Is Full-Mouth Reconstruction Painful?

In most instances, the treatments used in full-mouth restoration Smile 360 procedure are painless, and our patients are extremely comfortable before, during, and after they visit our office. If you’re apprehensive about dental visits, checkups, or procedures, we encourage you to try sedation or sleep dentistry to help you feel more comfortable.

At our office, we strive to make every procedure as comfortable as possible. Modern anesthesia and techniques make most procedures very comfortable. There may be some pain during recovery, but we help you manage that. And if you’re apprehensive about any treatments, we offer sedation dentistry to help you overcome those fears.
