The Durability Of Dental Implants

Implant stability quotient (ISQ) is a value that indicates the level of osseointegration or the stability of the connection between the bone and the dental implant. High ISQs are typically associated with the success of dental implantations and the longevity of dental implants. The value of an implant’s ISQ is measured in a scale that ranges from 0 to 100, with the acceptable stability rate being between 55 and 85. The higher scales are more often found in the mandible or the lower jaw compared to the maxilla or upper jaw.

How is are implants’ ISQ measured?

Finding the ISQ of dental implants is an interesting process. ISQ can be measured with resonance frequency analysis (RFA), a method that that makes use of a probe and magnetic force. First, a small magnet is attached on top of the artificial tooth’s abutment or the connector that is placed on or built into the dental implant. Next, the probe emits magnetic forces directed to the small magnet. Finally, the probe listens to the tone of the vibration in the abutment and translates it into an ISQ value.

How durable are dental implants?

It is sufficient to say that dental implants can last a lifetime. Once they have fully healed, you only have to take care of them like normal teeth — by brushing at least 2 times a day, flossing once a day, and having them checked by your dentist at least twice every year or so.

Dental implants in our practice

While the prospect of getting dental implants can cause a bit of apprehension to some people, you can rest assured that our cosmetic dentistry practice provides each patient with options for a most comfortable treatment process. Dental implantation can be performed with local anesthetic, and we also practice sedation or sleep dentistry for those who might feel uncomfortable going through the procedure awake or conscious. And with pain medication, post-operative discomfort also shouldn’t also be a problem for our patients.

It takes about 3 months to completely heal from the operation. Osseointegration takes place during this time, bonding the root with the bone of the jaw. Once the bone has healed, the abutment is then placed on the implant and topped by the crown or bridge.
