Understanding the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gum Disease
- Posted on: Oct 30 2019
A healthy smile not only looks beautiful, but is free from damaging conditions such as periodontal disease and tooth decay. These are the two hazards that can occur to the smile due to poor oral health care habits. Dr. David S. Frey of Beverly Hills, CA is a dedicated professional ready and willing to help area patients with their oral health and wellness, starting with the prevention (or treatment) of gum disease.
What is gum disease?
Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection that starts in the soft tissues. However, without treatment, the condition can greatly worsen and cause irreversible damage to the smile. Gum disease creates pockets between the gum tissue and the natural teeth where bacteria can rest and grow, and this can cause resulting problems such as swollen, red gums or gum tissue that bleeds when brushed. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the faster treatment will work and the less likely the condition will progress into the later stages. If patients do not get a proper diagnosis and treatment of their earlier stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, their smile is at risk of developing the later stage of gum disease known as periodontitis. At this point, the entire smile is at risk. The bone of the jaw may shrink and natural teeth become loose or lost.
Steps to diagnosing, treating, and preventing gum disease
Dr. David S. Frey educates his patients on the steps that may be involved in the care of a smile with gum disease:
- Diagnosis – a diagnosis of gum disease occurs during a thorough evaluation with our dental team. It may include a physical examination as well as x-rays.
- Treatment – treatment of gum disease may include cleanings, scaling and root planing, or the use of antibiotics to control the infection.
- Prevention – taking care of the smile is the best way to prevent gum disease. This includes regular brushing, flossing, and visits to the dental practice at least twice a year.
