Full Mouth Restoration: The Artistry of Creating a New Smile
- Posted on: Jan 25 2016
Full mouth restoration refers to the process of simultaneously restoring or rebuilding teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. Conditions that may benefit from a full mouth restoration or reconstruction include: teeth that have been lost due to trauma or decay, teeth with fracture or injury, and severely worn out teeth due to long-term acid erosion or teeth grinding. In addition, this series of procedures may also help a patient who complains of headaches and jaw and muscle pain due to malocclusion or imperfect positioning of the teeth.
The reconstruction or rehabilitation process usually involves cosmetic dentists or those who specialize in veneers, bridges, and crowns. From time to time, the expertise of periodontists or gum specialists, orthodontists or tooth position specialists, endodontists or tooth pulp specialists, and oral surgeons may also be needed for a full-mouth restoration.
The Full Mouth Restoration Process
Full mouth restoration addresses issues of the teeth, gums, temporomandibular joints, jaw muscles, and aesthetics.
Before restoring the teeth, the dentist should address periodontal issues such as deep pockets, bone density and gum tissue irregularities, and periodontal disease. Unhealthy gums and jawbones can be treated with soft tissue or bone grafts to make sure that the reconstructed teeth have a reliable foundation. Another section that should receive special attention is the stability of the bite. The dentist has to make restoration plans that consider changes on occlusion or how the maxillary (upper) and mandibular (lower) teeth approach each other.
The dentist will then check for cavities, decay, cracks, root canal issues, short or long teeth, and tooth wear or movement to determine the restorative process each tooth may need. The patient may be recommended to have porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, bridges, or implants to restore damaged or missing teeth. By the end of the restoration process, the patient should have teeth that are of the right shape, size, color, and proportion, and these aspects should visually complement his or her gums, lips, face, and profile.
