Actually, broccoli isnโt the only vegetable that might help prevent oral cancer according to a study in the Annals of Oncology. My Beverly Hills cosmetic dentistry patients are routinely screened for oral cancers as part of their examinations but dentists are all about prevention so this article caught my eye.
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and bok choy have been associated with reduced risk for a number of cancers including oral cancers.
Italian researchers analyzed data from studies done in Italy and Switzerland ย to look at the association between eating these vegetables and the risk of multiple cancers. Compared to people who ate no cruciferous vegetables, those ย who ate these at least once per week cut their risk of oral cancer by 17%. Cancer of the esophagus was reduced by 28%. Kidney cancer was cut by 32% and breast and colorectal cancers were reduced by 17%. The risk of other types of cancers were cut as well.
Even if you eat your veggies you need to remember to visit the dentist for an annual oral cancer screening. Pleaseย contactย Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. David Frey at 310-276-4537 to schedule your next appointment. Early detection saves lives โ especially for oral cancers.
